J.A House..
San Antonio de Benagéber, Valencia.

Project 2024-2025

Located in the town of San Antonio de Benagéber, in Valencia, Casa J.A. is an architectural response that thoughtfully engages with a unique plot characterized by its narrow shape and a steep slope between the street level and the central part of the site. This topographical challenge has defined the project's spatial and design strategies, turning the incline into an opportunity to craft an architectural narrative.

The design of the site layout stems from a functional necessity: the inclusion of a basement level. To achieve this, two distinct access ramps have been designed: one vehicular ramp leading to the garage, ensuring sufficient height for the basement, and a pedestrian ramp guiding visitors to the house at the rear of the plot. This pedestrian ramp serves not only a functional purpose but also acts as an architectural promenade—a carefully designed sequence that gradually unveils the house. The journey begins at the entrance gate, progressively revealing a window overlooking the dining area, and culminates at the main entrance of the house, where light and space converge to set the stage for the interior experience.

In section, the project adopts a "pyramid" form, rising from the street level to the first floor and descending towards the rear of the site. This interplay of heights and transitions emphasizes an architecture that relates both to the terrain and its immediate surroundings. The fragmented volumes, arranged in a sequence of angular breaks, reflect an aesthetic of simplicity that resonates with the values of Mediterranean architecture: light and shadow, proportion, materiality, and connection to the environment.

The material palette reinforces this pursuit of serenity and sobriety. Limited and harmonious, it includes gray porcelain, stone, monocouche render, exposed concrete, and wood for the interiors. These materials not only provide a uniform and timeless aesthetic but also enhance the sense of calm that the client sought. This effect is amplified upon entering the house and its southeast-facing terrace, where natural light floods the spaces, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and comfort.

Casa J.A. is, at its core, an exercise in balancing functionality, design, and context. Through an architectural language that combines rigorous proportion with sensitivity to place, the project succeeds in transforming a challenging plot into a haven where architecture and the Mediterranean environment are in dialogue.
